Central London’s greatest treasures are the ‘Palaces of the People’.
While having a different feel to those of neighbourhood pubs in residential areas, Zone 1 London pubs are the cornerstone of bustling London life. Whether being used for after work drinks, meeting up with mates from out of town, or before the football – the organic unrivalled buzz of the honest London boozer makes London come alive.
They stand in elegant perpetuity and that longevity is a comforting contrast to the often transient nature of their customers in a city of 9 million residents where different types on drinkers interchange throughout the day. Many pubs have been present for centuries - erected long before even some countries came into being - and they’ll be here long after we’ve all gone continuing to piece together the rich tapestry of a varied London life.
Many are listed buildings with important cultural heritage and to truly understand their national importance and iconic status with the populous. they need to be witnessed first hand. This is often best experienced after five o’clock on a Friday when in the winter they’re packed to the gills with workers downing tools, shackles off, trying to keep warm or on a roasting summers night as thirsty punters spill out onto the street imbibing cold pints.
While many people come to London to visit its galleries, palaces and stately homes our real heritage is in the culture of its people. Almost absorbed into the very bricks of these stalwarts, to really understand how London ticks you’ll learn far more by spending a few hours in a traditional public house than you will on a tour of Buck House.
To whet the appetite a few of London’s treasures are featured below. This is very much a work in progress and post-Covid lockdown Mark III I’ll be out and about adding more.
